Your life is a story! If you’re a follower of Jesus, your life is the story of redemption and transformation through the power of God and a relationship with Jesus.
But have you ever realized that telling your story is a great way to tell people about Jesus? Yes, talking about the Bible or sharing important aspects of your faith are other ways, but within your relationships with others telling your personal story of how Jesus has impacted your life is often the easiest and most natural way to tell someone about Jesus.
But how do you do it? Where do you begin?
There are many ways you could go about it, but here’s one way that you can share the story of God’s work in your life:
1. What was your life like before you met Jesus?
Some people have dramatic stories of a life completely opposed to the things of God before meeting Jesus. They may tell of a life of drugs, sex, or just simply being actively against Jesus. These stories are often powerful and dramatic. If you grew up in the church, however, you might feel like your story is missing this part. Like you don’t think you have a life before Jesus. You may be right. But that doesn’t mean that your story is any less powerful or impactful. We are all born sinful and separated from God. We all had a time in our life before Jesus was a part of it.
2. How did you realize that you needed Jesus?
Was there some defining moment in your life when you realized that something needed to change? Maybe you hit a rough patch in a relationship. Maybe you fell in with the wrong crowd. Or maybe there was a significant event that shook your worldview. The Holy Spirit works in our hearts to bring us to faith and He can speak through the events of our lives to draw us to Jesus.
3. What did beginning to follow Jesus look like for you?
This is another point where people’s stories can be so very different. For some, it may be simply going to church for the first time. Others may start out in a support group or having honest conversations about faith with a Christian friend. What did it look like for you when you first started to take your faith seriously?
4. The difference Jesus has made in your life.
Lastly, what difference has being a follower of Jesus made in your life? Tell stories about how knowing Jesus has changed how you view and go through life. Talk about something you do today that you wouldn’t have done before or how you have a different outlook on things that happen to you or the people around you. Here is your chance to show how being a follower changes things. Often, Christians are seen as no different from anyone else which often leads to the question, “If being a Christian doesn’t change anything, why bother?” This is the time to show how great the difference really is!
So there it is – four parts to telling your story about your relationship with Jesus. Try putting this to practice with someone this week. Don’t force it or make it all weird. Pray that God would give you opportunities to share your story and be ready when the opportunity presents itself. Your story may be what helps someone else start their journey with Jesus!
