Christ’s birth changed the entire course of history. We even separate history according to Jesus’ birth (B.C. to A.D.)! Jesus changed the world by entering history as the “Word made flesh,” and He can change our lives as well.
With all the joy and excitement that Christmas brings, it's easy to forget that Jesus was born into this world to die for us on the cross. The wonder of Christmas is that God on high became God with us - in our mess and brokenness - so that we could have life.
The history-defining event of Jesus' birth was announced first to a group of shepherds - men who were part of a class of people known as "sinners" because their job kept them unclean and they weren't able to be part of the religious life of Israel. But "sinners" are exactly who Jesus came to save! The news of our Savior, Christ the Lord, is good news that brings great joy to ALL people!
As we begin the season of Advent, we need to back up a few steps from Christmas to see the bigger picture of why Christmas had to happen in the first place. It's the fulfillment of a promise made at the very beginning of a redeemer who would save his people from their sins.
